Literacy and Numeracy Programme (LitNum)

Programme Overview

The Literacy and Numeracy (LitNum) Programme has been implemented since 2013 in Mpumalanga Province as one of our flagship programmes. The programme is aligned to our goal of transforming society by implementing and supporting sustainable programs that are community-focused, empowering and geared towards nation-building in nature. The main goal of the LitNum Programme is to build a solid foundation in the numeracy and literacy skills. This is done by capacitating Grades R – 4 teachers to improve their content knowledge and acquire new numeracy and literacy teaching approaches that contribute towards improved academic performance of our foundation phase learners. Through this programme:

  • We create teaching and learning environments that enhance the interactions between the teacher and the learners and thus expands learning opportunities for all.
  • We invest in laying a solid foundation essential for success in any interaction between people, community members and even at work.
  • Aim to reduce inequality and promote easy access to information, which enhances problem solving skills.

The LitNum Programme focuses on the following:

  • HOD and Lead teacher support: Empowering Foundation Phase Heads of Department and Lead teachers to effectively provide leadership in curriculum management and utilization/integration of resources in teaching.
  • Teacher professional development: Enhance literacy and numeracy content knowledge and teaching skills: Gr R – 4
  • Resource provisioning: literacy and numeracy resources, coupled with training on how to use them which is more on learning through play.
  • Learner progress: Monitoring and tracking improvement in development of basic literacy and numeracy skills and use the results to design relevant support interventions.
  • Parent/community involvement: Involve parents to develop interest in supporting their children at home and to take an active role in their learning activities.
