Historic Milestones

The Thebe Foundation Trust was established in 2011 by Thebe Investment Corporation to drive the overarching Group strategy on community development and to create a framework to support the excellent work being done across the Group.

Historical Significance: The organisation has deep roots in South Africa’s liberation history, born from the vision of iconic leaders including Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Beyers Naude, and Enos Mabuza, with Vusi Khanyile serving as the Founding CEO.

Guiding Principles: Al of the Foundation’s historical achievements and ongoing work are anchored in six foundational values:

Development of the Literacy and Numeracy (LitNum) Programme, in Partnership with MDoE

Establishment of the Dr EJ Mabuza Scholarship Fund in partnership with Sol Plaatjie University and the University of Mpumalanga

Establishment of the Children of Employees Basic
Education Fund

Sponsorship to beneficiaries at Action 4 the Blind for the visually impaired

2017

Partnership expansion with other universities across the country

2018

Expansion of LitNum from Grade 1-3 to Grade R-4
Expansion of the LitNum programme from 16 Schools to supporting 62 schools with HOD and Teacher training

2019

Launch of the Thebe Entrepreneurship annual Business Summit

2022

Established partnership with the Living Link, supporting learners with Intellectual Disabilities
Launch of the annual Skills and Career summit for the scholarship beneficiaries

Intake of cohort 2 of the LitNum programme in 16 schools in Gert Sibande and eNkangala
